EThekwini Municipality’s Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department (EPCPD) in partnership with KwaDukuza Municipality are currently preparing for the fourth Central KwaZulu-Natal Climate Change Compact (CKZNCCC) meeting which will be held in KwaDukuza Municipality on the 13th of February 2015. The last CKZNCCC meeting, held in Durban in October 2014, resulted in many of the adjacent local governments expressing their interest in joining the Compact, and signing the Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC). Furthermore, institutions present at the meeting such as the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), and the South African national Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), expressed their interest and willingness to partner and work with local governments by offering support and tackling issues of capacity.
The aim of the CKZNCCC is to provide a platform for local governments in the Central KwaZulu-Natal region to engage and learn from each other and to access opportunities as a unit. Local governments present at the fourth CKZNCCC will be provided with the opportunity to provide feedback on their respective climate change adaptation and mitigation municipal projects and programmes and share the successes and challenges they might have experienced. Municipalities will also be able to share their progress on formalising Compact membership. In addition KwaDukuza Municipality will present on the innovative climate change projects that they have been implementing in association with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, amongst others.
Invitations to this CKZNCCC meeting have been extended to local government officials from compact member municipalities, other adjacent local governments with an interest in joining and being part of the Compact, provincial and national departments, as well as interested organisations and institutions.
