The Central KwaZulu-Natal Climate Change Compact (CKZNCCC) held their last meeting for 2016 on 2 December 2016. The meeting was co-hosted by Ugu District Municipality and uMdoni Local Municipality. The CKZNCCC last held their meeting within this region in 2014, so this meeting provided a platform for the two municipalities to showcase their climate change achievements during this period.

Ugu District Municipality was amongst the first municipalities that endorsed the formation of the CKZNCCC which has become a significant platform for local municipalities to share their climate change experiences and provide ongoing support to one another.  Through learning exchange opportunities, workshops and training opportunities provided through the DAC, these KZN South Coast have benefited immensely and their climate change progress reflects this as they incorporate climate change mitigation and adaptation across all municipal department initiatives.

At this meeting, national and provincial government together with the South African Local Government Association presented on capacity building opportunities beneficial to local government officials.  Opportunities presented included online learning, a communication master class and a preview of climate change risk assessment resources available for the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Participants at the meeting were provided with an opportunity to share current climate change work done within their respective municipalities including any challenges experiences. A summary of Compact achievements will be included in the DAC Annual Report which will be available in the first quarter of 2017. During the meeting, participants were invited to attend the Southern African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) Carbon Storage workshop that will be taking place at the uMhlathuze Local Municipality, Richards Bay in early February 2017.

Participants were also alerted to the planned exchange with Mozambique municipalities that will take place in February 2017.  The exchange will include a workshop on conservation planning and solid waste management.
